The appointment of Amir Shavit to the position of chairman of the Electricity Authority was approved today (Sunday) by the government. Shavit will join the authority after two years in which it operated without a chairmanAnd, when during this period the place was filled by Yoav Katsavi, who will retire from the authority. Shavit was elected to the position last June by the Minister of Energy, Karin Elharer, when since then the procedure at the Companies Authority and the Committee for Reviewing Senior Appointments (Gilaor Committee) has been delayed. Already a month ago, the committee approved the appointment, but it could not be brought up for final approval by the government, because the committee went on summer break, and it was not possible to sign the protocol of the discussion on the Shavit matter.
Until recently, Shavit served as CEO of the holding company Meshki HaDrom. Meshki HaDrom owns holdings in Meshk Energy, which is active in the field of renewable energies and co-owns a private gas station. The company is also involved in the private supply of electricity together with Cellcom (under the name Cellcom Energy J”), energy storage and more.
In his previous positions, Shavit served as the CEO of the Solad and Tamar power plants of the private electricity producer Adeltec. At the beginning of his career, Shavit served as the center for the water and energy field in the Budget Division of the Ministry of Finance and then as the Vice President of Economics and Finance at the Israel Railways. Shavit’s extensive experience in the private energy sector is expected to help him professionally As the regulator responsible for the electricity market, but also to limit it with a rather extensive conflict of interest agreement, against projects that he was related to.
