Government negotiations to locate new headquarters for microchip companies in Spain continue after the summer break. The Secretary of State for Telecommunications, María González, confirmed this Thursday that these negotiations will come to fruition “with certainty” over the next few months.

Within the framework of the 37th Digital Economy meeting organized by Ametic in Santander, the Secretary of State highlighted the arrival in Spain of the new headquarters of IMEC (Interuniversity Microelectronics Center), after signing a new agreement with this university research institute Belgian manufacturer of nanoelectronics of great prestige thanks to the Perte Chip. González assured that the company will locate its second headquarters in Spain, but they are still deciding between two locations in our country that he did not want to reveal to the media.

Broadcom Factory

Furthermore, he assured that the Government maintains several paths open at different levels of development with large technology companies. In the case of the American Broadcom, with an investment announced last July of 920 million euros in Spain, the Government has confirmed that it will install a microchip factory in our country, although the location has not yet been decided.

Of course, González highlighted the Executive’s intention to “diversify” the locations of these investments, since up to now they are highly concentrated in Catalonia. «The idea of the Perte Chip is to make a country and make a network. The decisions are private and we can only influence in a limited way, but we are very aware of the entire Spanish map, “said the Secretary of State for the branch.

In total, the semiconductor department will have 12,250 million euros of public investment until 2027 to carry out all the announced projects and those that remain to come. It is the largest strategic project among the dozen that have been tested by the Government within the Recovery Plan.

The Secretary of State highlighted that Spain is the country that is best positioned “worldwide” within the microelectronics and semiconductors sector, proof of this is the attraction of investment from companies such as Broadcom, Cisco or Intel in our country.

Digital skills course

On the other hand, the general director of Red.es, Alberto Martínez Lacambra, announced during his speech at the forum that the Government will launch a call before the end of the year endowed with 45 million euros to improve the basic digital skills of 200,000 people. He revealed that 34% of the Spanish population does not have basic digital knowledge, although we are ten points better than the European average. It will be a 7.5-hour face-to-face course that will be given throughout the country so that anyone can buy or manage a digital reservation.
