Government Agency Files Complaint Against Guayaquil Mayor and Brothers
On Thursday, July 11, the Agency for Regulation and Control of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources filed a complaint against the mayor of Guayaquil, Achilles Alvarez, and his brothers, Antonio Alvarez (president of Barcelona Sporting Club) and Xavier Alvarez, for alleged irregular trade of combustible.
The complaint, filed with the State Attorney General’s Office, also targets five other individuals and two fuel sales and distribution companies: Fuelcorp SA and Copedesa Gasgrupo SA. The Álvarez brothers are shareholders in the latter.
The agency accused the individuals of discrepancies between the volume of fuel dispatched by Petroecuador and the volume billed by various service stations.
Neither the Mayor’s Office of Guayaquil nor the Presidency of Barcelona have issued statements regarding the case. The Mayor’s Office reported that their legal team is preparing a response. The Agency indicated that the spokesperson for the case is the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
This case further widens the gap between the Presidency of the Republic and the Buenos Aires City Council, as differences between President Daniel Noboa and Mayor Alvarez have been previously reported.
