Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that short-term and long-term actions have been decided for the overall development of the leather industry on the occasion of the upcoming Eid al-Adha. He also said that steps have been taken to get loans to leather traders on easy terms.
He said this at the 7th meeting of the ‘task force formed for the purpose of making recommendations and working plans for the development of the leather industry’ in the conference room of the ministry on Sunday (May 12).
In the meeting, the minister said that short-term and long-term actions have been determined for the overall development of the leather industry on the occasion of the upcoming Qurbani Eid. He also assured of all kinds of cooperation in the implementation of these tasks including policy cooperation from Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BCIC) and the Ministry of Industry.
Prime Minister’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman, State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu and Senior Secretary Zakia Sultana of the Ministry of Industry participated in the meeting.
The minister also said that preservation facilities should be increased in the leather industry so that leather does not get damaged. Steps are also being taken to ensure that leather traders/wholesalers do not face capital problems and get loans on easy terms. During Eid al-Adha, animal skins are sent to various religious institutions including orphanages. It involves our religious feelings. Therefore training can be provided to the concerned to ensure proper skinning, preservation and quality environment. Moreover, there is no previous situation in terms of solid waste management during Eid al-Adha. He mentioned that a lot of development has been done in this regard.
In the meeting, during the upcoming Holy Eid-ul-Azha, pricing of sacrificial skins and proper removal of skins, various media campaigns in the form of advertisement/TVC for collection and preservation, construction of temporary depots at strategic places for local collection of skins and preservation of skins with sufficient salt, prevention of smuggling of sacrificial animal skins and Urgent decision-making regarding skin collection. Apart from this, it was decided to take necessary action to prevent any kind of extortion, chaos or obstruction in leather transportation activities and to prevent any rumors from spreading in media including social media about leather.
Apart from this, it was informed in the meeting that BSIC will take necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the leather industrial city and provide free salt to the orphanages. Besides, on the request of the representative of Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA), it was also informed to request the financial institutions department and Bangladesh Bank to take necessary measures in order to get loans from banks on easy terms.
