President Gitanas Nausėda signed the decree regarding the candidacy of A. Kubilius a couple of weeks ago. On Tuesday, the candidate for European commissioners was also approved by the Seimas.

A. Kubilius himself has previously stated that he would focus on EC portfolios related to foreign and defense policy. According to him, for the time being, other Community states that have appointed candidates to the EC are seeking economic portfolios.

In her turn, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who nominated A. Kubilius, emphasized that the MEP can “objectively apply for any portfolio”.

“The position of the former prime minister allows us to say that there are very few areas of life in which the prime minister does not have a certain competence, knowledge and ability to solve issues related to that area,” I. Šimonytė told reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday.

The candidacy of the Eurocommissioner in Lithuania is submitted by the Government after coordinating the position with the President and the Seimas.

After submitting the candidacy of A. Kubilius, the procedures will move to Brussels, where discussions on the division of the respective portfolios will take place with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Also, the candidates for commissioners will participate in hearings in the European Parliament (EP) committees of the relevant fields. Later, the EP will vote on the approval of the full composition of the EC.
