This technique, consisting of transforming the engine of a thermal vehicle to make it an electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicle, remains little developed today.

If “retrofit” remains a still confidential practice, the government strongly believes in this solution to reduce polluting emissions from the transport sector. He has just published three orders on Tuesday Official newspaperwhich must allow “a more massive deployment of the retrofit“. But what is retrofit? This is a technical operation, authorized in France since 2020, consisting of transforming the engine of a thermal vehicle, to make it an electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicle.

The three published decrees fall within the framework of plan d’action national in favor of the retrofit, presented by the executive last spring. And they aim more particularly to “facilitate approval procedures, at the request of professionals». «Approval is the big obstacle to retrofitting, because it is expensive and there are a lot of delays», noted Denis Benita, transport engineer at Ademe, in our columns last month. A unique conversion kit must in fact be designed and approved for each type of vehicle before it can be retrofitted.

Retrofitted motorhomes

In detail, one of the decrees now authorizes the retrofit of so-called “specials»: tow trucks, motorhomes, vehicles accessible to people in wheelchairs, mobile cranes, etc. Another specifically concerns retrofit other than electric: retrofitted CNG or LPG vehicles, hybrid or rechargeable hybrid retrofit, or even thermal hydrogen, are now exempt from technical advice from the manufacturer if the vehicles are more than five years old. This rule was already in force for 100% electric retrofitted vehicles. Finally, for heavy utility vehicles, “the installation of an efficient depollution system reaching the Euro VI depollution level will make it possible to claim a Crit’Air 2 certificate», explains the Ministry of Energy Transition in a press release.

«With these three decrees, we are facilitating approval procedures by including new vehicles within the scope in order to accelerate the development of the sector.», welcomes Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher, estimating that “the retrofit is particularly suitable for certain frequent uses which do not require a significant autonomy, such as city cars, but also light utility vehicles or even certain heavy vehicles“. The autonomy of retrofitted vehicles is in fact lower than that of new electric vehicles. As for professionals in the sector, we applaud these measures. “Thanks to these three decrees, the activity of retrofit manufacturers will be facilitated and this emerging sector will be able to accelerate its development.», Already promises the Minister Delegate in charge of Industry Roland Lescure.
