The new laws include reinstating the ban on issuing these work permits for low-paying jobs in cities where the unemployment rate is equal to or higher than 6%.

Canada will reduce by thousands the number of temporary foreign workers authorized in the country, after years of a supposedly very open immigration policy. “We will reduce the use of the system to bring in low-paid temporary foreign workers”Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, made a statement to the press on Monday. “We are also looking at changes to the high income component”he added.

This program allows non-Canadians to come and work in the country on a short-term basis, for periods ranging from a few months to several years. Intended to fill job shortages, it has grown dramatically but has been criticized for its abuses, mainly because workers are tied to employers. The new laws include reinstating the ban on issuing temporary work permits to foreign workers for low-paying jobs in cities where the unemployment rate is equal to or higher than 6%.

“Now, we know that more qualified Canadians can fill the vacant positions”for his part explains Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Labor. “The changes made today will put Canadian workers first”he explained. According to the authorities, the labor market is tighter than in recent years. Canada recently experienced its strongest population growth in more than half a century thanks to immigration. The country today has more than 41 million inhabitants.

But Canada’s unemployment rate also climbed to 6.4% last year and the growing population has worsened the housing and resource crisis.
