Never before have the Goyas had so many nominations. In the 2023 edition, number 37, to be held in Seville, the awards expand the nominees in all categories to five. Until now, only the best picture nominations had five finalists. In all the others there were only four contenders to win the award. The newly elected president of the Academy, Fernando Méndez-Leite, has linked the decision to the quality of Spanish cinema. “In the Board of Directors it has been agreed that the nominees in each category go from four to five nominees, a decision closely connected with the good times that Spanish cinema is experiencing,” said the person in charge. This opens up more possibilities to enter the select group of nominees for the awards, which in itself is recognition for the different members of the great family of cinema.

The acting categories already had five nominees in 1988 and 1989, although during the first two editions, and later between 1990 and 1997 they only had three finalists. From 1998 to 2022 the nominees for interpretation have been four.

The Academy has also confirmed the date of the celebration: on Saturday, February 11, Seville will host, for the second time in the history of the awards, the award ceremony. It will be the largest edition of the 36 held so far and in which more actors and actresses will walk the red carpet.
