In this new school year, the prize for the cheapest boarding school in France goes to establishments in the Grand-Est region (Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne-Ardenne). All public high schools see the price of accommodation for students in boarding school largely revised downwards: it goes from 1.80 euro per night to 1 euro per month, or 10 euros per year.

The “social measure for purchasing power” was voted late by the regional council, just before the start of the summer holidays, so that it is not yet widely known.

A “particularly welcome” measure for professional high schools

“We have only just received the flyers that we are going to distribute to families”, explains the headmaster of the Pierre-Mendés-France vocational school in Contrexéville (Vosges), Ahmed Ahouani. “My parents don’t know, they’ll be happy when I tell them. The boarding school is practical, I am not tired from traveling and I was able to choose the training that I like. And now, what’s more, it’s going to cost less,” says Alexandre, 16, in his final year in catering.

In this establishment which accommodates 317 students, two thirds are boarders. “This is a particularly welcome measure for vocational high schools like ours which do not respond to the logic of the school map. The students come for our specific lessons, they are sometimes schooled more than fifty kilometers from home. The cost of the boarding school could be a hindrance in the choice of orientation,” rejoices the principal.

“In our sector, concludes Ahmed Ahouani, we no longer have trains but we are in a tourist town, it is important to maintain attractiveness thanks to this type of measure. »
