BIG REPORT – Decimated during the Indian Wars, bison almost disappeared from the United States. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were only a few hundred individuals left. Today there are more than 500,000.

The vast wild plains stretch as far as the eye can see. The relief of this magnificent landscape, straight out of a Jack London or Jim Harrison novel, is chiselled in the distance by the granite and rock peaks. In the middle of the Black Hills in the state of South Dakota, in the heart of Custer State Park, cowboys on horseback gallop in the middle of these prairies holding the star-spangled banner or snapping their whips in order to gather the hordes of bison scattered across the plains.

This scene, from another era, is nevertheless very contemporary. Folklore is largely accentuated here to thrill the tourists who come in large numbers to admire the spectacle. For the rest, everything is very real, and even necessary. Within this park, animals live wild in the meadows. But the available space is only viable for nearly a thousand animals.
