He was overly defensive against the Pacers. He was just biting the ground. That is why it was called ‘The Great Wall’. But Angshuman Gaikwad could not be defensive anymore in the game of life. The former Indian batsman, coach and selector has passed away at the age of 71.

Gaikwad was suffering from blood cancer for a long time. He returned home after undergoing treatment in London until last June. After that, the physical condition started to deteriorate again. Finally, he was admitted to a hospital in Baroda. If the condition worsens, admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is required. Gaikwad died there.

Gaikwad played in the Indian national team from 1975 to 1987. He has played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. After retirement served as national team selector and later coach. His innings of 201 off 436 balls against Pakistan in 1983 is famous in history. Gaikwad batted a total of 671 minutes on the way to playing this innings.

Gaikwad coached India for two terms between 1997 and 2000. Under his coaching, India played in the final of the 2000 Champions Trophy. The Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) and the head coach of the men’s team, Gautam Gambhir, have expressed grief over the death of this former cricketer.
