Tonight on Rai3 one of the films that made the history of the Italian western
These immortal 167 minutes of “Once Upon a Time in the West», Sculpted in the epic time of the big screen, set a perfect Saturday night for fans of the western revisited with the eye of nostalgia, memory, myth and for the many friends of Sergio Leone, of whom we have been orphans for 33 years, great among the Italian directors whom we often forget to mention but whom we cannot help but love because he transmits his American cinephile passion to us. The facts: Seeing the deal, Ferzetti wants the land owned by a former prostitute and hires a killer to kill her (Henry Fonda with his blue eyes, the best in Hollywood), but ours arrive and they recognize the mysterious Harmonica (Charles Bronson) and cheyenne bandit Jason Robards. Once the myths have fallen, ordinary mortals arrive full of vices and arrogance, an almost Brechtian parable. Here is a cast of all stars for the top of the Italian western who browsed through the memories of Hawks and Ford, in whose Monument Valley some scenes were shot. A documentary by Zippel will soon pay homage to Leone at Venezia Classic and the list of interventions includes Spielberg, Tornatore, De Niro, Eastwood, Tarantino, who was the most influenced by Leone, as well as Morricone who is also an invisible sound protagonist in this film. In the shadows the epic of a genre that is history, the praise of the pause, the waiting, the silence, as the long silent prologue demonstrates: Fellini said that Leone built his films with the methodical patience of those who manage to close the ship in the bottle.
