That is the experience that a good part of the Valencian population experiences when they decide to buy an ecological tourisma type of vehicle that includes both hybrids like the electric ones that are increasingly becoming – preferences aside – an option only available to the wealthiest.

The reason is clear. Before the pandemic, according to data from the Tax Agency, on average the price of a car was just over 18,000 euros. The data for this 2023 already placed that average at 23,600 euros, that is, 30% more expensive. Furthermore, to this amount we must add the difficulty in having the necessary charging point at your disposal to plug in the vehicle, an installation that requires an economic investment and, in addition, waiting in some cases for more than a year to have it operational.

In this context, it is understood latest statistics offered by the insurers’ association Unespawho in the ‘We are Safe’ study – which analyzes car insurance holders and not citizens with driving licenses – shows how in 2022 the penetration of the most sustainable models occurred especially in those enclaves of Spain with greater purchasing power, especially those that involve both Madrid and Barcelona, ​​which bring together 15 of the 20 municipalities with the highest type of ecological tourism.

More money, more ‘eco’ cars

At the head of them all, With 14.08% of the total vehicle fleet, is the Madrid town of Las Rozas, which precisely ranks as the seventh with the highest average per capita income in the entire country. Below, also with double-digit values ​​of hybrid or electric cars, is Sant Cugat del Vallès (10.91%), a municipality in which it combines to close the ‘Top5’ of the wealthiest towns in Spain and which, in addition, is located in the metropolitan area of ​​Barcelona.

After these two enclaves andthe city itself comes Madrid (10.82%) and the municipality with the highest average income per person in all of Spain is Pozuelo de Alarcón, where 9.23% of its vehicle fleet does not use fossil fuels to propel itself. For its part, Rivas-Vaciamadrid, also in the surroundings of the capital, has a total percentage higher than 8.1%.

In this classification of greater commitment to electric and hybrid vehicles, it is especially striking that the first municipality to break the hegemony of Madrid and Barcelona es Castelló de la Plana, in ninth place, with 5.6% of its vehicle fleet being more environmentally friendly, although the average in the province remains at 3.69%. Valencia also enters the top twenty positions (5.33%), although in its case the provincial weight of these more sustainable vehicles drops further, to 3.37%, the same value as for the province of Alicante.

Difficult access for young people

But not only the geographical location influences who can afford ‘eco’ tourism. A look at The age of the insured also clearly shows that to drive a ‘greener’ car it is necessary to have passed the first years of working life. Not in vain, less than one in ten ecological cars are driven by young people under 30 years old, with almost the majority of these vehicles – almost 80% – being among those aged between 31 and 65 years, population groups with greater work activity than young people.

Despite this circumstance, Citizens under 30 years of age are the ones who bet the most on ecological vehicles (5.61% of the total number of cars)a reality that shows that those young people who can afford to pay for a car at those early ages have sufficient purchasing power – in addition to greater environmental awareness – to be able to buy an electric or a hybrid.
