BOLZANO. The killing of two wolves in Alta Val Venosta was signed last August 9th by the President of the Province of Bolzano Arno Kompatscher: the reason is to be found in the 30 heads of cattle killed in the 9 attacks recorded in 3 different mountain pastures – in the territories of Malles, a hamlet of Planol, and in Curon.

The mountain pastures of these municipalities are designated as pasture protection areas, the eleven owners have implemented flock protection measures (shepherds, livestock guard dogs, electric fences). The Provincial Forestry Corps has been authorized to take the two wolves.

Animal removal permits are valid for 60 days from the date of signature. The permit was drawn up by experts from the Provincial Forestry Corps in collaboration with the Provincial Attorney’s Office, after taking into account the positive report received from the Wildlife Management Office and after thoroughly examining the legal situation. L‘Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) declared the sampling compliant with provincial law, but did not provide an assessment.

“The favorable conservation status of the wolf has been confirmed at European level, in the Alpine region, in the Apennines and in Trentino-Alto Adige, in agreement with several scientists (Prof. Boitani, 2018; Prof. Klaus Hackländer, head of the Institute of Wildlife Biology and Hunting Management at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, 2023). The authorization was published on the web page of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano ‘Fauna, Hunting and Fishing’ of the Agriculture and Forestry Department”, the Province reports in a note.
