the green sticker should disappear in 2023

More than thirty years old, the green vignette will soon bow out. The small square coupon, which a law of September 1986 requires applied against the windshield, should disappear from 2023. Today, a breach of the rule is punishable by a fine of 135 €.

The Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire confirmed this on Tuesday, September 20, during a press conference with the French Insurance Federation (FFA): “We are working with the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin to remove this sticker (…) which testifies that you are well insured, so that it is dematerialized. »

The final deletion, which should only be confirmed during the course of next year, is presented by Bercy as a new “shock of simplification for our compatriots” and a reduction of ” cost “. Not to mention the ecological gain, insurers estimating at 50 million the number of related documents printed and sent each year.

A more efficient electronic file

If the green vignette lives its last months, it is above all that it has become obsolete. “We have a file of insured vehicles (FVA), which is much more effective in combating insurance fraud,” recalled Tuesday Florence Lustman, president of the FFA.

Since 1is January 2019, the police have access to data from the FVA, created in 2016 to fight more effectively against driving without insurance – 235 people were killed that year in a road accident involving an uncovered vehicle (i.e. 7% of deaths). Provided by insurers imperatively within 72 hours of signing or terminating a contract, this database provides police and gendarmes with an immediate inventory of the vehicle: registration number, name of the insured, contract number and period of validity.

“Historically, the sticker and the green card served as proof for the insurance. The FVA is 99% reliable, significantly more than the green card and sticker systemdistinguished in May Florence Lustman in The Argus of insurance. For example, a motorist who cancels during the year can keep his sticker on his windshield for several months, while the file is updated daily. »
