The players in the automotive industry in the Hauts-de-France region are convinced of this: if Emmanuel Macron travels to Dunkirk (North), Friday, May 12, it will be to confirm the arrival of the Taiwanese group ProLogium Technology. This battery manufacturer should announce the construction of a factory not far from that of Grenoble’s Verkor which, after surveying around forty sites, has also set its sights on the northern city. The opportunity for the President of the Republic to highlight his action in favor of the reindustrialization of the country.

“This territory perfectly embodies our policy, with both a transformation of the actors in place and a strong attractiveness”we summarize at the Elysée, where we intend to make the announcement the cornerstone of a sequence devoted to praising the pro-business action and the good economic results of the government. “Our balance sheet is credible, that’s what gives investors confidence”assure-t-on encore.

ProLogium, whose technology makes it possible to produce batteries with reduced charging times, plans to invest 5.2 billion euros and create 3,000 jobs by 2030. The company, which has already built a first mass production line, hesitated between France, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany for its second plant. Dunkirk, which has land available on its port site, would therefore have won. On 180 hectares, ProLogium envisages a production of 50 gigawatt hours (GWh) to 60 gigawatt hours. Enough to equip between 500,000 and 700,000 electric vehicles per year.

Dunkirk is one of the three “Ds”, which, with Douai (Nord) and Douvrin Billy-Berclau (Pas-de-Calais), draw the future valley of the electric battery that are destined to become Hauts-de-France. This will not be its first reindustrialization. After the closure of the mines and most of its steel industry, it has become the leading automotive region in France, with three Renault factories, three for Stellantis and one for Toyota (56,000 jobs in total), and aspires to s impose on the European electricity market.

Hauts-de-France already concentrates all tricolor gigafactory projects for the automobile. In Douvrin Billy-Berclau, ACC, a company run by Stellantis, TotalEnergies and Mercedes, is the most advanced of the three. The machines, installed in 1,800 containers and parts of China and South Korea, passed through the port of Dunkirk. ACC is aiming for a production of 40 GWh per year in 2030 – enough to equip more than 500,000 electric cars – and promises, over time, the creation of 1,000 to 2,000 jobs. The first batteries will come out of the factory, which is to be inaugurated on May 30, in September.
