The head of the FBI Christopher Wray said that the agency believes that the origin of the corona virus “probably” originated in a “laboratory controlled by the Chinese government”.

“The FBI has for quite some time assessed that the origin of the epidemic is likely a potential laboratory incident,” he told Fox News today (Wednesday), the agency’s first public statement regarding the origin of the virus.

Throughout the pandemic, China has denied the theory, calling such claims far-fetched and racist.

Ray’s comments come a day after US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns called on Beijing to “be more honest” about the origins of the coronavirus.

In an interview on Tuesday, Ray added that China “has done its best to try to thwart and obfuscate” efforts to identify the source of the global epidemic.

Several studies show that the virus made the jump from animals to humans in Wuhan, most likely at the city’s seafood and wildlife market. The market itself is a 40-minute drive from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

But despite Ray’s statements, there is still no consensus among the American administration on the subject.

US media reported on Sunday that the US Department of Energy assessed with “low confidence” that the corona leaked from a laboratory. On Monday, the spokesman for the White House National Security Council, John Kirby, said that US President Joe Biden supports A “whole government effort” to get to the root of the matter.

“We’re just not there yet,” he said. “If we have something that is ready to be briefed to the American people and the Congress, we will.”
