Major General Haliva, handing over the post to the new head of the army’s intelligence service, Shlomi Binder, said he took “full responsibility for the mistake of the intelligence department”.

Haliva said those in leadership positions are expected to take responsibility.

He said that the army’s intelligence service has conducted a thorough investigation into these terrorist attacks by Hamas to better equip Israel to face future challenges.

Haliva also warned against the spread of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip to the wider region and again called for the creation of a national commission of inquiry to guarantee the future security of Israel and its people.

Binder said the events of October 7 and “the unbearable price we had to pay will always stay with me.”

Haliva officially announced her resignation in April.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galants and the head of the internal security service, Ronen Bars, previously took responsibility for the mistakes during the October 7 attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to take personal responsibility for these mistakes.

Hamas and other militant groups from the Gaza Strip invaded southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages.

Israel responded to these terrorist attacks by launching a military campaign against militants in the Gaza Strip.
