The arrival of a trough on the Peninsula this Thursday, accompanied by a colder Atlantic air mass, will cause a drop in temperatures of up to 10ºC compared to the previous day, as well as heavy showers and storms, according to eltiempo.es. In this way, this Thursday is likely to be the last day of the fourth heat wave of this summer in Spain.

Thus, the trough will approach the north of the peninsula this Thursday, which will cause a temperature drop in Galicia and the Cantabrian communities, as well as in other areas of the Atlantic slope. This trough will extend to a large part of the northwestern half of the peninsula as of Friday, so the drop in temperatures will reach more areas.

Likewise, the trough will move to the east during the weekend and will leave the Peninsula through the Mediterranean, so the decrease in values would last until Monday and would be added to an increase in instability in the form of showers and storms. , according to data from eltiempo.es.

In more detail, the maximum temperatures will be around 38ºC and 40ºC this Thursday in a large part of the peninsular interior despite the arrival of the trough, whose effects will cause the values to drop in Galicia, the Cantabrian communities and areas of the Atlantic slope.

However, a general drop in temperatures is expected for Friday, when the maximum will drop in much of the north of the peninsula, which will be more noticeable in the interior of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarra, where a drop is expected. up to 10ºC in 24 hours.

In any case, the warnings for high temperatures will still remain active in the center, south and east of the peninsula, with maximums that will range between 36ºC and 38ºC, as well as in the Guadalquivir, the interior of the Region of Murcia and the south of Valencia. where thermometers could register between 40ºC and 42ºC.

“Weekend with temperatures below normal”

The thermal decrease will continue throughout the weekend, although on Saturday it will still reach 40ºC in regions of the southern peninsula, mainly in the Guadalquivir Valley or the Murcian region.

In this way, the heat will give all of Spain a breather on Sunday, and despite the fact that the uncertainty is greater for this day, eltiempo.es forecasts that the maximum will not exceed 35ºC. Specifically, in the Bay of Biscay, temperatures will be around 21ºC and 23ºC, between 22ºC and 25ºC in the northern plateau and around 24ºC and 27ºC in the central area.

On the other hand, higher temperatures are expected in the south and the Mediterranean, whose values would be around 30ºC and 33ºC, as well as in the Canary Islands, which would oscillate between 30ºC and 34ºC. The trough is expected to move away through the Mediterranean on Monday, which would bring a new thermal rise in the Peninsula. However, eltiempo.es has indicated that the environment would continue to be “very mild” in general, with highs below normal for the time, except for the Canary Islands.

Heavy showers and storms

In addition to a drop in temperatures, the trough together with the north wind would increase instability as of Friday, when there could be light rains in Cantabrian regions as well as the formation of storms in the Pyrenees and the Iberian System.

These storms would appear in more areas on Saturday, although according to the current predictions of eltiempo.es the probability is greater in the Pyrenees and in the Iberian and Central Systems, although more dispersed storms are not ruled out in the northern plateau, Aragon, Catalonia and the peninsular eastern interior.

With respect to Sunday, the trough is expected to approach the Mediterranean, which would result in the “most complicated” day due to the maritime wind and the “very high” sea surface temperature, which could cause locally intense rainfall in Catalonia. and the Valencian Community as well as the Balearic Islands, with showers that could still occur on Monday.

Likewise, eltiempo.es has warned that some current scenarios show the circulation of a small DANA during Sunday afternoon, although it has asked for caution given the high uncertainty surrounding the isolation or not that this cold drop will have.
