Kochi: The High Court dismissed the PIL challenging the Governor’s action of extending the bills passed by the Assembly without taking a decision. The action of the division bench involving the Chief Justice was not even accepted on file. The main allegation in the petition was that the Governor’s non-signing of the legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly was a challenge to democracy.
Meanwhile, the cabinet approved the bill to remove the governor from the post of university chancellor. The cabinet meeting approved the draft bill to be presented in the assembly. The bill will be introduced in the first days of the legislative session, which begins on December 5. A total of five bills have been prepared as each university requires a separate amendment.
It has been decided that the allowances and other expenses of the Chancellor will be used from the University’s own funds. The bill does not require the Governor’s prior approval as it uses own funds. The cabinet will meet again tomorrow morning to determine the order of priority of the bills to be presented in the assembly session.
