In Calles, near Valencia, 30.7 degrees were measured on Thursday. But not everyone agrees. What is certain is that in the western Mediterranean there has never been such heat before in January

The high pressure that has been stagnating over the western Mediterranean for days, and also partly touching central-southern Italy, is causing many records of the highest temperatures ever recorded in January and in winter in general, both in minimum and maximum temperatures, to be adjusted. In the coastal areas between Spain and France it reached 30 degrees. The Spanish network Avamet (Valencian Association of Meteorology Josep Peinado), recorded on Thursday 25 January at 4.05 pm in Calles, a hamlet of Chelva, in the hinterland of the province of Valencia at 395 meters above sea level, a temperature of 30.7 degrees . According to Avamet, it would be the highest temperature ever recorded in Europe in winter, news that was picked up and relaunched by many websites, including media outlets.

Other measurements

The Aemet_C.Valenciana and Aemet networks, i.e. the provincial and state government meteorology agency, however do not mention either the European record or give credit to the Avamet detection, rather they report that the highest temperature recorded yesterday in Spain was found in Chelva, but it was 29.6 degrees. Not even the two main Spanish newspapers, El Pais and El Mundo, report the European record measurement.

The weather station

To avoid misunderstandings and strengthen its registration, Aemet_C.Valenciana published the photo of the automatic weather station in Chelva on X. It is now up to the World Meteorological Organization to validate the record or not, a process that can take several years because it is necessary to check whether the temperature sensors are located inside a special ventilated solar screen raised to a height varying between 1.25 and 2 meters above the ground on frequently cut natural turf or green synthetic carpet distanced from any obstacle.
