A search has been underway since Tuesday morning June 13 at the home of Mohamed Sifaoui, co-responsible for the main beneficiary association of the Marianne fund to fight against separatism, announced the Senate commission of inquiry, which was to hear him.

“It turns out that, since six o’clock in the morning, a search has been underway at his home”preventing him from being able to honor this appointment, declared Claude Raynal, president of this commission of inquiry, at the opening of the hearing, reading a message from Mr. Sifaoui’s lawyer.

Mr. Sifaoui was the director of operations of the Federative Union of Physical Education and Military Preparation Societies (USEPPM), the main beneficiary of the Marianne fund (grant of 355,000 euros), whose management, controversial, is in the viewfinder of the Senate inquiry committee, but he is also the subject of a judicial investigation opened to the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) for suspicion of embezzlement of public funds.

The next hearing will be that of Marlène Schiappa, scheduled for tomorrow at 10 a.m., according to our journalist Samuel Laurent on his account Twitter.

Many “shortcomings”

The Marianne fund, endowed at its launch with 2.5 million euros, was set up in April 2021, after the assassination of Samuel Paty, and aimed to finance associations defending “the values of the Republic” by providing, on social networks, “counter-speech” to radical Islam.

A report published by the General Inspectorate of Administration (IGA) a week ago denounced many “shortcomings” of the association, both in the application process and then in the use of funds. The IGA has noted serious “irregularities”as “doubling of salaries for the two leaders of the USEPPM project – with ultimately a very disappointing result in terms of [matière] of content: 451 communications on different accounts, eight articles on a website”.

After the IGA report, Christian Gravel, the head of the interministerial committee for the prevention of delinquency and radicalization (CIPDR), the structure responsible for managing this fund at the Ministry of the Interior, has resigned.
