The Lower House of the United States, with a Republican majority, approved this Wednesday to formalize the impeachment investigation launched by conservatives against President Joe Biden.

These investigations had been opened in September unilaterally by the then president of that chamber, Kevin McCarthy, and the Republicans now hope that their validation in the plenary session by 221 votes in favor and 212 against will facilitate their access to information, documents and testimonials.

The Republicans announced this Wednesday their intention to denounce Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, for contempt of Congress, who was summoned to testify behind closed doors and did not comply with that summons.

The president of the House of Representatives Oversight Committee, James Comer, highlighted in a statement that the son of the American president will not receive special treatment just because of his last name. Hunter Biden refused to testify behind closed doors and instead went to Congress in the morning to deliver a public message to the press.

“Let me say it as clearly as possible; my father was not financially involved in my business… I am here to testify at a public hearing today to answer any of the Committee’s legitimate questions,” he said outside the Capitol.

Hunter Biden is being investigated by the Republican majority of the House of Representatives within the framework of the investigations opened against his father for alleged irregularities, such as influence peddling to benefit family members in businesses when he was Barack Obama’s vice president (2009-2017).

“The evidence shows that Joe Biden met with Hunter’s business associates and his name is at the center of the family’s business strategy,” Comer said, recalling that statements in Congress are standard procedure.
