  • The Academy of Surgical Innovation arose to assist in the specialized training of undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons of various specialties and subspecialties.
  • The new space plans to train more than 100 health professionals a year.
  • A surgeon must always keep updated to offer the best service to his patients.

One of the biggest constants in medicine is change. Nothing is static and to stay current it is necessary to adapt to the various innovations that appear. It’s best appreciated with a surgeon because his job and the way he does it is quite different than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

The development of minimally invasive surgery and robotic equipment have transformed the work in operating rooms. Now more tools are offered to health professionals but it is of little help that these innovations exist if their correct use and continuous training are not known.

With this in mind, in Greetings we had the opportunity to interview Dr. Ariel Ortiz Lagardere, who is the Director of the International Institute of Metabolic Medicine located in Tijuana. While his most recent project is the Academy of Surgical Innovation. It is a new space for the specialized training of undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons from various specialties and subspecialties.

How and when did the International Institute of Metabolic Medicine emerge?

The IIMM begins in 2022, although behind it there are more than 30 years of experience in the area of health tourism. Everything was generated naturally due to the high demand of foreign patients who were looking for quality services at affordable prices.

In 30 years of experience, I have operated on 30,000 patients, mainly bariatric surgery and plastic surgery. And to provide security, the IIMM has five world-class certifications that support our work.

On the other hand, something that distinguishes us is that we offer a different service. We specialize in ambulatory surgery that moves away from other models where patients remain hospitalized for weeks. In our case it is the opposite because thanks to the use of technology, patients are discharged as soon as possible.

With the current global obesity crisis, what is the importance of bariatric surgery?

It is very important because Tijuana is among the two countries with the highest obesity in the world. But the most important thing is to understand that bariatric surgery is not necessarily for people with morbid obesity but that there are other criteria that must be met. We do not operate the excess kilograms but the disease.

Within the IIMM, the Academy of Surgical Innovation has just been inaugurated. What does this new space consist of?

It arose thanks to an agreement that was signed with Medtronic; they have the medical technology and we have the knowledge. My idea now is to help in the specialized training of undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons of various specialties and subspecialties.

In this new Academy will be taught from courses to simulations of multiple operations. I believe that knowledge is better if it is shared and that is why the objective we have set is to encourage continuous improvement.

What types of specialties is the Academy of Surgical Innovation for?

For all types of specialists in surgical areas. The vision that was previously held that a surgeon only required a scalpel is now obsolete. Now it is essential that the health professional knows the most modern tools on the market and knows how to use them.

From the above, from a general surgeon to ENT, cardiac surgeons, renal surgeons, neurosurgeons and other fields can come with us to the Academy of Surgical Innovation.

How has technology changed Medicine and especially bariatric surgery?

The changes are too many and go beyond the development of modern medical equipment. Surgeons are now more proactive in the sense that it is not necessary to wait for an overweight patient to develop collateral damage, but rather it is possible to operate beforehand and thus anticipate future problems.

Today, and thanks to tools such as minimally invasive surgery, it is possible to perform an operation in 20 minutes, recover in a couple of hours in the hospital, and go home the next morning or even earlier.

What is the process for a surgeon to be admitted to the Academy of Surgical Innovation?

Admission to the Academy of Surgical Innovation is through us or through Medtronic. There is already a waiting list because our intention is to offer comprehensive training. It is not only about giving courses and forgetting about the students, but each one receives follow-up to identify their progress and resolve all their doubts.
