Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine star in an adaptation of the literary hit The Thought Of You. And the result is mixed.
Published in 2017, the novel explores the romantic relationship between Solène, a successful 40-year-old gallery owner, and Hayes, 20, a member of a “boy band” that Solène’s 13-year-old daughter is crazy about . The novel had a great impact among our neighbors to the south, the rights were quickly acquired and filming began in October 2022.

On screen, Solène is played by Anne Hathaway (41 years old in real life and 40 years old on screen). Her art gallery is definitely more modest, and she is the mother of 16-year-old Izzy (Ella Rubin, who looks, unfortunately, about 21). Unlike the novel, she was devastated by her divorce from Daniel (Reid Scott) who cheated on her and left her… to the point where she only talks about it during her first meeting with the singer 24 years old, Hayes (Nicholas Galitzine , 29 years old, which greatly reduces the age gap between him and Anne Hathaway, making the comparison with the young man’s mother obsolete).
Hayes, in his influential twenties, is a global star because he is part of August Moon, a “boy band” loved by teenagers. Tracked by the paparazzi and hounded by fans and gossip magazines, Solène and Hayes will try to hide their love story.

The screenplay by Jennifer Westfeldt and director Michael Showalter easily strips away all financial, emotional and sexual independence from Solène, leaving her forty-year-old very happy to arouse the interest of a young man. Hayes, a little older, without the infirmity that inhabits him in the novel, here he is willing to buy all the works of art in the forty-year-old’s small gallery to allow her to come with him on tour.
Listening to the opinions of the readers, the two screenwriters also decided to change the ending of this romance, which further helps to weaken the discourse of the novel.
