The idle consumption of the RX 7900 XTX drops from 104 W to 20 W when activating VRR

AMD has had various consumer problems with its Radeons at the driver level, and some still have even if it is not so serious. As the management programs only show the consumption of the GPU itself, to know the total consumption of your graphics cards you have to go to other specialized programs and equipment. ComputerBase has made some changes to how it does its testing, showing that some of its models can have high power consumption at idle, but funny enough it can be substantially reduced by enabling VRR (variable refresh rate).

Now on that website he uses Powenetics v2 from Cybenetics, a thousand-euro system that allows the global consumption of the graphics card —and the motherboard— to be measured much more precisely, and a 144 Hz UHD monitor with VRR, either FreeSync, G-SYNC, or Adaptive Sync. This activation of the adaptive refresh together with Powenetics v2 has led to a table showing the rest consumption of the graphics card with and without VRR activated. The difference is notable at all, especially in the Radeons, with the consumption of the 7900 XTX falling by 81%, from 104 W to 20 W. The rest of the Radeon 6000 and 7000 also see their consumption reduced, although some RTX and Arc see it increased slightly.
