The authorities of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala shared a video to show the conditions of the central campus, in zone 12 of the capital, after being occupied for 386 days by students in resistance who oppose the election of Walter Mazariegos as rector of that house of studies.

The audiovisual of two minutes 42 seconds takes a tour of the facilities, which were delivered last Friday, July 9. The inspection was accompanied by the Public Ministry.

The images show a deteriorated campus due to disuse and lack of maintenance, accumulation of vegetation, which according to the video narration caused damage to the asphalt and infrastructure. They found rodents and insects, as well as security and maintenance equipment in poor condition, trash, and damaged building entrances.

Due to the conditions in which the central campus is located, the authorities made the decision to close it until further notice, and the facilities will be inspected. The closure will be “until the completion of the proceedings that correspond by law,” it was reported.

It will take several weeks to recover and disinfect the areas to “guarantee the return to activities with the necessary health and safety measures”, both for administrative staff and students.
