The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will pay 4.7 billion dollars to Argentina. This aid is part of the restructuring of Argentina’s debt. The agreement – which must still be approved by the IMF board of directors – in any case endorses the austerity policy of the new president, the ultraliberal Javier Milei.

According to the IMF, this aid tranche of nearly $5 billion aims “ to support the considerable efforts made by Argentina to restore stability ».
The body also welcomes “ the ambitious plan implemented by the new administration ».
It must be said that since coming to power last month, Javier Milei has increased his commitments to the IMF.
The ultraliberal president has, for example, committed to presenting this year a surplus budget equivalent to 2% of GDP. And for this, Javier Milei is implementing one of his main campaign promises: to make drastic cuts in public spending.
On December 20, for example, he signed a mega decree… If its application is still provisional, the text aims to modify or repeal no less than 300 standards.
This concerns sectors as diverse as housing, privatizations or labor law.
But these austerity cures are not to the taste of some Argentines.
While inflation has exceeded 160% over one year in 2023 and poverty affects 40% of the population, discontent is increasing. The main union, the CGT, is calling for a massive strike on January 24.
