Department of Health Reveals Benefits of Adequate Physical Activity in Preventing Heart Disease and Stroke

August 7, 2023 – Dr. Montien Kanasawat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Health, has unveiled the results of a long-term follow-up study that emphasizes the importance of getting at least 150 minutes of adequate physical activity per week. The study, conducted in the UK and published in the academic journal JAMA, found that such physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, arrhythmia, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and stroke by approximately 22-38%.

The study involved monitoring the physical activity levels of 89,573 individuals with an average age of 62 years for a period of six years. They were equipped with a measuring device called an accelerometer for one week to track their activity. The findings revealed that those who engaged in more than 150 minutes of physical activity per week were 22-38% less likely to develop heart-related conditions compared to those who exercised less.

Furthermore, the study examined two groups – one with a high proportion of physical activity on weekends (referred to as “weekend warriors”) and the other with a high proportion of physical activity during weekdays (known as “active weekdays”). The research suggested that the first group had a slightly lower risk of experiencing arrhythmia, heart failure, and stroke by 2-5%. Meanwhile, the latter group had an 8% lower risk of developing ischemic heart disease.

Dr. Udom Asawutmangkun, Director of Physical Activity Division for Health, commented on the changing lifestyle and working habits of Thai people. He noted that the sedentary nature of office-based work and the high workload during weekdays often leave individuals with little time for exercise. However, whether physical activity occurs on holidays or weekdays, it still has a positive effect on overall health.

Dr. Asawutmangkun also emphasized the importance of reducing sedentary behavior, such as long periods of sitting or lying down, as it can have detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system and brain. The Department of Health recommends incorporating physical activity throughout the day, such as standing up and moving around every 60 minutes or using adjustable desks to alternate between sitting and standing while working. These suggestions align with the World Health Organization’s approach of “every move counts” for maintaining a healthy body.

As the study highlights the significant benefits of regular physical activity, individuals are encouraged to prioritize their health by incorporating exercise into their daily routines. The Department of Health aims to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in preventing heart disease and stroke, ultimately fostering healthier lifestyles for the Thai population.
