Exercise in the Morning and Afternoon Lowers Risk of Type 2 Diabetes, Study Finds

A new study published in the journal “Diabetologia” has found that individuals who exercise in the morning and afternoon are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. However, this connection was not as visible for those who exercised in the evening.

The study, conducted by researchers who recorded the physical activity of 93,095 individuals with no history of type 2 diabetes using accelerometers, found that the intensity of exercise played a significant role in reducing the risk of diabetes. Each additional metabolic equivalent in the morning was associated with a 10 percent reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes, while in the afternoon it was associated with a 9 percent reduction. The more active individuals were, the lower their risk of developing the condition. However, no statistically significant association was observed between physical activity in the evening and diabetes risk.

Interestingly, the study also highlighted that the regularity of physical activity did not seem to be linked to the risk of type 2 diabetes, while intensity showed a clear association. Both moderate and vigorous activity were found to be associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes at any time of the day.

The researchers also noted that other lifestyle factors, such as sleep amount and diet, influenced physical activity and diabetes risk. When these factors were taken into account in the calculation models, the connections between physical activity and the risk of diabetes became even stronger.

The authors of the study concluded that total physical activity, rather than its continuity across the week, may be an important factor in influencing the risk of type 2 diabetes. They also highlighted the role played by the time of day in exercise, suggesting that exercising in the morning and afternoon may have a greater impact on reducing the risk of developing the condition.

This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between exercise and type 2 diabetes risk. It emphasizes the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily routines and highlights the potential benefits of exercising in the morning and afternoon. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms behind these findings.
