Research Shows South Korean Teenagers Using Smartphones for Over 4 Hours a Day at Higher Risk of Mental Health Problems

A recent study conducted at Hanyang University Medical Center in South Korea has revealed alarming statistics regarding the smartphone use of teenagers in the country. According to the research, South Korean teenagers are spending more than 4 hours a day on their smartphones, leading to a higher risk of mental health problems and increased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors.

The study, which analyzed data from 50,000 survey respondents between 2017 and 2020, found that teenagers who use their smartphones for at least 4 hours a day are exhibiting symptoms of stress, anxiety, and are more likely to be overweight. They are also more susceptible to using drugs and have a higher rate of suicidal thoughts compared to other groups.

Interestingly, the research also found that teenagers who use their smartphones for 1-2 hours per day are less likely to suffer from various mental health problems compared to those who do not use smartphones at all.

Furthermore, the study revealed an increasing trend in smartphone usage, with 85.7% of survey respondents in 2020 reporting using their smartphones for at least 2 hours per day, compared to 64.3% of survey respondents in 2017.

Previous research has also linked smartphone use to higher rates of mental health problems, insomnia, and optic nerve and muscle disorders. While the study does not clearly indicate that smartphone use causes health problems, the researchers believe that the findings can be used to guide future healthcare strategies.

The results of the research were published on the journal PLOS One website on Wednesday.

This study sheds light on the concerning impact of excessive smartphone use on the mental health and well-being of South Korean teenagers. Efforts to address this issue and promote healthier smartphone habits among teenagers are crucial in ensuring the overall well-being of the younger generation.]
