Study Finds Pregnant Women in “Rich” Countries Lacking Essential Nutrients for Healthy Pregnancy

A recent study conducted by the University of Southampton has revealed that pregnant women in high-income countries are not getting enough essential nutrients for themselves and their unborn babies. The situation is expected to worsen with the increasing popularity of vegan diets and the elimination of meat and dairy products.

The study, which examined the health status of 1,729 expectant mothers, found that 90 percent of the women lacked vital vitamins necessary for a healthy pregnancy and the well-being of the fetus. Specifically, the study highlighted deficiencies in vitamins B12, B6, and D, folic acid (B9), and riboflavin (B2), all of which are plentiful in meat and dairy products.

Lead author of the study, Keith Godfrey, emphasized the seriousness of the vitamin deficiency identified, stating that it is a significant problem that needs to be addressed. “Our study shows that nearly every woman trying to conceive had deficient levels of one or more vitamins, and this number will only worsen as the world shifts to plant-based diets,” said Godfrey. “People often think that nutrient deficiencies only affect those in underdeveloped countries, but our study proves otherwise.”

Furthermore, the international research group emphasized the importance of over-the-counter dietary supplements and specific advice on nutrient-dense foods. Researcher Shiao-Yng Chan from the University of Singapore, who was also involved in the study, stated, “If we continue to move towards a diet with less meat and dairy products, this will reduce the intake of micronutrients that are important for a child’s development. Vitamin deficiencies will continue to increase unless women take more supplements or are supported with specific advice on nutrient-dense foods.”

The findings of the study highlight the urgent need to address the lack of essential nutrients in pregnant women in high-income countries and to provide adequate support and education on maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy.]
