The study, which compared the vitamin D levels of 78,000 patients with data from death registers, found that those with a vitamin D level of 10 nmol/L or less had an increased risk of death by two to three times. Additionally, individuals aged 45 to 60 with low vitamin D levels were found to have a 2.9 times higher likelihood of dying. On the other hand, high vitamin D levels of 90 nmol/L or more were associated with a 30 to 40 percent reduction in mortality.

It is important to note that the study did not find a negative effect caused by excessively high levels of vitamin D in the blood, dispelling previous beliefs that an oversupply of the vitamin could lead to adverse health issues. Nonetheless, balanced vitamin D levels are crucial for overall health, with other studies linking vitamin D deficiency to a range of health issues, including diabetic kidney disease, cancer, and dementia.

As a result, experts are emphasizing the importance of receiving enough sunlight to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. The German Society for Nutrition recommends exposing the face, hands, and parts of the arms and legs to the sun for 5 to 25 minutes every day between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., depending on skin type and time of year. The study also underlines the need for widespread vitamin D supplementation, particularly among populations at risk of deficiency, to prevent premature mortality.
