The legislative benches of the Citizen Revolution movement (RC) and the Social Christian Party (PSC) still do not have the 92 votes to censure and dismiss Fausto Murillo as a member of the Judiciary Council, in the political trial called for this Wednesday, February 28 in the National Assembly.

The two political forces are putting pressure on this interpellation process in the legislature, which also includes the former member of the Judiciary Juan José Morillo. For the censure and dismissal of the two defendants, at least 92 votes are required, but the two groups currently have 68, which is why lobbying and negotiations began.

Fausto Murillo Fierro was appointed member of the Judiciary Council on January 29, 2019. and he was part of the shortlist that the National Assembly sent to the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) that received no challenges. Elcy Celi Loaiza, second on the shortlist, was appointed as a substitute, who would take center stage in the event of Murillo’s eventual dismissal.

Although this political trial includes former member Juan José Morillo, the political interest generated by this interpellation process falls on Murillo due to the position he holds in the Judiciary at the time of defining the competitions and evaluations of judges and prosecutors.

In its report, the Oversight Commission of the National Assembly recommended to the plenary session to initiate a separate impeachment process, in order to safeguard public ethics and the transparency of the Legislative and Judicial Function; This is in relation to what Article 80 (1) determines: “when it comes to a political trial against the members of a collegiate body, the political responsibilities determined will be individualized.”

There are five accusations that are formulated in this interpellation process and that were initially presented by assembly members Luis Almeida (formerly PSC) and Xavier Santos (formerly ID), in the previous legislative period, but the current Assembly decided to continue with the process and designated legislator Carlos Vera Mora (PSC) as the proponent.
