The Ministry of Public Health Emphasizes Importance of COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters in At-Risk Groups, Particularly Elderly with Comorbidities

In a recent statement, the Ministry of Public Health has highlighted the significance of COVID-19 vaccine boosters, especially for at-risk populations, such as the elderly with underlying health conditions. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, addressed the issue in response to the consideration by the loan expenditure screening committee (COD) to extend the deadline for the COVID-19 vaccine procurement program.

The Cabinet has acknowledged the results of the Department of Disease Control’s request for an extension, taking into account the current situation with COVID-19. Despite the easing of concerns among the public, there is a worrying trend of individuals neglecting to receive booster vaccinations as recommended. To address this, negotiations are underway with vaccine manufacturers to explore the possibility of using ready-made antibodies (LAAB) instead of booster shots. LAAB not only serves as a preventive measure but also has therapeutic potential for treating individuals who are unvaccinated and infected. However, LAAB comes at a higher cost compared to vaccines.

Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized the continued necessity of vaccinations, especially for high-risk groups who should receive booster shots along with the influenza vaccine. In addition, he provided an update on the progress of Thailand’s self-produced COVID-19 vaccine. Details of the progress and further announcements are expected later this month.

Dr. Nakorn Premsri, director of the National Vaccine Institute, supported the implementation of COVID-19 vaccines as booster shots in Thailand. The vaccines, developed based on the original strain, have proven effective in preventing severe illness, particularly among high-risk groups such as the elderly with comorbidities. By administering booster shots, the severity of the disease can be reduced in this vulnerable population. It is crucial to provide adequate protection for the elderly with comorbidities, as they face a higher risk of serious complications.

Dr. Nakorn Premsri also highlighted the importance of the vaccines’ adaptability to new strains. As the landscape of the virus continues to evolve, the Thai registered vaccines can be developed to address emerging variants, including the Omicron variant that may pose challenges in the coming months. The initial registration of the vaccines will serve as a foundation for accommodating and countering new strains.

As the Ministry of Public Health emphasizes the importance of COVID-19 vaccine boosters in at-risk groups, including the elderly with comorbidities, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and prioritize their health. The government’s efforts to negotiate vaccine options and develop self-produced vaccines are steps towards ensuring the ongoing protection of the population against the virus.
