According to the new recommendation, the blood pressure should be set to values below 140 to 90, because this can already largely prevent secondary diseases and deaths. The previous goal of less than 130 to 80 would be healthier, but it should only be aimed at if the blood pressure therapy does not cause side effects. “This target value definition is a pragmatic solution that also accommodates the reality of treatment. After all, what’s the point if we set those affected to lower values to reduce the risk even further, but they don’t tolerate the therapy and then stop it altogether?” said Prof. Markus van der Giet, Chairman of the German Hypertension League.

Many people do not know that high blood pressure is divided into stages. The stages should be communicated more clearly in order to make the serious consequences of high blood pressure clear and to motivate consistent prevention:

Stage 1 is an uncomplicated high blood pressure disease that has not yet caused damage to the organs. In stage 2, diabetes also occurs or there is already slight damage to the organs caused by high blood pressure, e.g. B. a chronic kidney disease that is not yet very advanced. In stage 3, high blood pressure-associated heart or vascular diseases or advanced chronic kidney disease have occurred.

“This staging […] is significant because it clearly shows the risk of untreated high blood pressure and also shows the particular severity of end-organ damage that has already occurred. Many people still don’t realize that high blood pressure is a serious condition with serious long-term effects,” explained van der Giet. The experts hope that the guideline will make this more visible and that more people will take their therapy seriously in order to prevent the disease from progressing.

The guideline also mentions new risk factors for high blood pressure: sleep disorders, migraines and depression. People with these diseases should have regular screening tests for high blood pressure. Air pollution and a migration background are also discussed as risk factors, as is gender reassignment hormone therapy in transgender people.
