On TikTok and Instagram you can see all kinds of videos about autism. Many people will recognize themselves in this and may make their own diagnosis. According to the videos, for example, you have autism if you don’t like socks, often arrive late, are interested and like to watch movies and series over and over again. But the Dutch Autism Association states that there are many more factors involved in getting an official diagnosis for autism. Radar reports this.

The only people who are officially able to diagnose people with autism are mental health psychologists and psychiatrists, and they do this after a very careful process, the NVA says. “Partly through parents, an image is established of what someone was like as a young child. In order to be diagnosed with autism, the characteristics must be present from childhood.” In addition, according to the NVA, no one is the same and there are many differences between people with autism, and one person can, for example, have major problems throughout his life and another can be moderately affected in the quality of life.

Underestimating problems

According to the association, openness about autism is good for people with autism, but due to TikTok trends like this, people make their own incorrect diagnosis, which can lead to underestimation of the problems in people with real autism.
