The income from overnight stays in Bulgaria in May increased by 32.2 percent on an annual basis and reached BGN 115.9 million, with BGN 58.8 million coming from foreign citizens and BGN 57.1 million – from Bulgarian, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) announced today.
The total number of overnight stays in May was 1,426.9 thousand, or 14.4 percent more than a year earlier. Bulgarian citizens made 740.6 thousand nights, and foreigners – 686.2 thousand.
The number of overnight stays in May increased by 15.9 percent compared to the same month of 2023 and reached 611.1 thousand, with an increase recorded both among foreign citizens – by 29 percent and among Bulgarian citizens – by 8.7 percent. The number of Bulgarian citizens who stayed overnight was 370.4 thousand and they spent an average of 2 nights. Foreign citizens numbered 240.7 thousand with an average of 2.9 nights, and 80.1 percent of them stayed in 4- and 5-star accommodations.
Total bed occupancy was 20.9 percent, increasing by 1.7 percentage points compared to a year earlier. The occupancy of beds in 4 and 5 star accommodations is highest – 23.5 percent, followed by those with 3 stars – 20.1 percent, and with 1 and 2 stars – 15.9 percent.
In May 2024, 2,613 facilities with 10 or more beds were operating in the country – hotels, motels, campsites, lodges and other places for short-term accommodation, with 105.6 thousand rooms and 233.5 thousand beds in them. Compared to the same month of the previous year, accommodation places increased by 4.9 percent, and the number of beds in them – by 4.4 percent.
82 percent of the total number of nights spent by foreigners and 43.7 percent by Bulgarian citizens were realized in 4- and 5-star accommodations. In 3-star hotels, 10.5 percent of overnight stays were made by foreigners and 27.5 percent by Bulgarian citizens, while in 1- and 2-star hotels, they were 7.5 and 28.8 percent, respectively.
