Prannoy Verma, the Indian High Commissioner appointed in Dhaka, said about the importance of cross-border electricity trade. He said uninterrupted power supply to neighboring countries through Indian grid offers great opportunities to each other.

He said this at the opening session of the regional workshop titled ‘Transforming Cross-Border Electricity Trade and Regional Electricity Market for Energy Secure South Asia’ organized in Dhaka on Monday (July 1). The Indian High Commission in Dhaka gave this information on Tuesday (July 2).

The workshop was jointly organized by India’s Research and Information System for Developing Countries, South Asia Group on Energy and USAID South Asia Regional Energy Partnership.

The Indian High Commissioner said there is a new cross-border pipeline, which was commissioned last year. This pipeline brings diesel from an Indian refinery to Bangladesh at high speed. Power is transported from Nepal to Bangladesh through India through cross-border power transmission lines.

Minister of State for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid spoke on the occasion through video conference. US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas, Chairman of South Asia Group on Energy RV Shahi and Mission Director of USAID in Bangladesh Reed Eshliman also spoke in the opening session.
