New Study Reveals 15 Factors That Influence Early Dementia Risk

A groundbreaking study from the University of Exeter and Maastricht University has shed light on the factors that influence the risk of early dementia in individuals under the age of 65. The study, which evaluated data from 350,000 people in Great Britain, has identified 15 factors that can impact the predisposition to early dementia, both positively and negatively.

According to the researchers, lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors can all play a role in the onset of early dementia. The results of the study, which were published in the journal JAMA Neurology, show that certain health factors such as vitamin D deficiency, hearing loss, and depression can increase the risk of early dementia. Additionally, alcoholism, social isolation, and low blood pressure when standing were also identified as crucial risk factors.

Surprisingly, the study also found that three factors could reduce the risk of early dementia. Moderate alcohol consumption, education, and greater hand grip strength were all associated with a decreased risk of early dementia.

Janice Ranson, a researcher from the University of Exeter, described the study as a “breakthrough in recognizing that the risk of early dementia can be reduced.” The findings of the study have significant implications for the prevention of early dementia at both the individual and societal levels.

Sebastian Köhler, Professor of Neuroepidemiology at Maastricht University, emphasized the crucial role of mental health in reducing the risk of early dementia. “In addition to physical factors, mental health also plays a crucial role, as does avoiding chronic stress, loneliness, and depression,” said Köhler.

The study’s findings suggest that there are multiple factors that can influence the risk of early dementia, and by taking these factors into account, the risk of early dementia can be reduced. This research opens up new possibilities for preventative measures to combat early dementia and its associated risk factors.]
