Stormed by thousands of tourists every day, the villages of the Luberon are forced to adapt little by little. A situation that some residents who are mobilizing refuse.

It is the most beautiful village in the world. A title awarded to Gordes (Lubéron) last March by a prestigious American magazine. What accentuate the pressure of visitors on this site already taken by storm. Everyone wants their souvenir photo, like this man who came especially from the Philippines: “We wanted to see Gordes, it looked magnificent and indeed, the site keeps all its promises”. In high season, the influx can reach 10,000 visitors per day. To avoid nuisance to its 2,000 inhabitants, the town hall has created relief car parks and increased the parking rate. But that’s not always enough.

A petition against a hotel

30 km away, Lourmarin also suffers from overcrowding. A collective is mobilizing against the development of large car parks on agricultural land, or the planned expansion of several hotels. Even less famous villages are affected. In Cabrières-d’Avignon, a small discreet town in the Luberon, a project aims to transform the medieval castle into a luxury hotel by 2026. The association of opponents of the project has launched an online petition which has collected more than 2,000 signatures. In a Luberon so popular with tourists, part of the population is reaching saturation point.
