Today, September 15 at 17.30, an installation will open in the Dome Gallery of the Telliskivi Creative City, drawing attention to the problem of cemetery waste.

This installation is part of an exhibition on the environmental theme “Lähme Nulli!”

The Cemetery Garbage installation was implemented in collaboration with World Cleanup Day Estonia and Gratitude Service OÜ. The installation uses disposable grave candles, artificial flowers and plastic lids for flower pots collected from cemeteries.

“We live in a make-use-throw away era. Garbage quickly disappears from our sight, so the problem of garbage is easy to ignore. Exhibition “Striving for Zero!” demonstrates garbage, including cemetery waste, to a wide range of people,” explains the general organizer of the exhibition “Striving for Zero!” Katharina Papp.

According to the head of World Cleanup Day in Estonia and the public organization MTÜ Puhta Ilma Koda, Elike Saviorg, although the topic of using coffee cups and disposable tableware is now widely heard, almost nothing is said about disposable cemetery waste. “Every resident of Estonia should take time and carefully consider their choices regarding each group of products in the store. Do I buy an ordinary candle in a store and light it in a lantern located at the grave of a loved one so that it burns without a trace, or do I bring ten disposable memorial candles in plastic cups to the grave, which just a few hours later will turn into garbage on the grave? Saviorg.

“There are dozens, if not hundreds, of examples of such habits in every person’s life, and they can be changed quite simply. You just need to want it and start noticing your choice! As a result, the benefits for nature and the environment will be simply incredible,” the head of World Cleanup Day in Estonia motivates readers.

One of the goals of the exhibition “Striving for Zero!” is to offer concrete solutions. Thus, at the opening of the “Cemetery Trash” installation, anyone will be able to make a reusable lantern-candle from a glass jar. The exhibition is organized with the support of Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023 as part of Tallinn’s international campaign “Save our Sea” in support of the Baltic Sea.

The installation “Cemetery Trash” will be on display in the Telliskivi Creative City until November 16. Exhibition “Striving for Zero!” at the Salme Cultural Center will be open until November 30, 2023. Entrance to the exhibition is free.
