The head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, indicated in a statement that “today marks the first anniversary of the Derna flood, which swept the city and left behind wounds that will not heal,” saying: “We remember and pray to God to have mercy on those pure, innocent souls who were martyred on that painful night.”

Al-Dabaiba added: “The tragedy was greater than words, and its effects still hurt our hearts, but the spirit of steadfastness and brotherhood shown by Derna and all of Libya is a living testimony to the strength of this people, their panic, and the solidity of their structure despite all attempts at fragmentation.”

He said: “On today’s first anniversary, we also remember the tremendous efforts made in the first hours, as national rescue teams, both civilians and military, responded with speed and dedication, working tirelessly to save lives and help those affected amidst extremely difficult circumstances.”

The public services and water companies played a pivotal role in removing the effects of the destruction and preparing the city to receive aid and relief. Along with these national efforts, the contributions of sisterly and friendly countries were not absent, as they rushed to provide technical and logistical support and rescue teams, thus supporting the Libyan people in one of their most difficult moments.”

He added: “It was an integrated response that embodied national cohesion in the face of the Derna disaster, so that, despite the ordeal, those efforts remain a shining sign in our memory, a witness to what can be achieved with the spirit of solidarity and cooperation.”

Dabaiba concluded by saying: “May God have mercy on the victims of the flood, and may God preserve Derna and keep it prosperous and peaceful, and may God preserve Libya and its one and united people despite the treachery of the schemers.”
