In January 2020, the Iraqi parliament approved by a majority vote the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country in response to the elimination of the head of the Iranian special forces “al-Quds” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Qasem Soleimani and the deputy head of the Iraqi Shiite militia Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who died on the night of 3 January 2020 as a result of a US airstrike at Baghdad International Airport.
