The Israeli army confirmed on Thursday that Mohammed Deif, commander of the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Gaza last month.

“The Israeli military announces that on July 13, 2024, IDF fighter jets bombed the Khan Yunis area, and after an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Muhammad al-Deif was killed in the strike,” according to Reuters.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant considered the killing of the leader of the military wing of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Mohammed Deif, “a major step in the efforts to eliminate Hamas.”

Galant commented on the Israeli army’s announcement, a short while ago, that Al-Daif was killed based on intelligence information collected by the Israeli army and public security services.

The statement pointed out that “the warplanes precisely raided the compound where Mohammed al-Deif and Rafeh Salama, the commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade in Hamas, were hiding, and whose elimination was confirmed several weeks ago. Along with al-Deif and Salama, a number of other terrorists were eliminated.”

In a statement on July 15, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that there are important indications that the assassination of Qassam Brigades commander Mohammed Deif was successful, but he will not say anything definitive until we obtain more information.

For his part, the deputy head of the Hamas movement in Gaza, Khalil al-Hayya, responded to Netanyahu’s previous statements in this regard, saying, “The leader of the movement’s military wing, Muhammad al-Deif, is listening to you now and mocking your false statements.”
