The Ministry of Health is publishing the 2021 Health Professions Manpower Report, which presents trends in health professions licensees until the end of 2021, with the aim of assisting decision makers and researchers in planning the health professions workforce in Israel. The information is based on the Ministry of Health’s databases, the RA data, the KA survey of the CBS and the comparison between the doctors’ file from the Ministry of Health and the income tax file from the Treasury, which was done by the CBS.

According to the report, there was an upward trend in most health professions in the last decade. The proportion of male and female doctors, dentists, brothers and sisters has increased in recent years, after a decrease in the previous decade. The number of pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, communication clinicians, dieticians, dentists, optometrists, and clinical geneticists continues to increase.

The rate of employed doctors rose to 3.3 per 1,000 people in 2020, from 3.0 in 2014, a figure below the average of the OECD countries which stands at -3.6 in 2020.

The number of new licenses in medicine is on the rise in the last decade, 2,024 new licenses in 2021. A 2.8-fold increase from 727 in 2010, of which 776 were graduates of time, a 2.2-fold increase from 349 in 2010. At the end of 2021, there were 43,262 holders of permission to practice medicine, of which 32,520 until the age of 67.

At the end of 2021, there were 23,215 specialists in medicine, of which 17,368 were up to the age of 67, with 1,057 added during 2021.

In 2021, 1,777 male and female doctors began residency, an increase from 881 in 2010.

The rate of employed brothers and sisters was 5.1 per 1,000 people in 2020, a figure lower than the average of OECD countries of 9.7.

The number of brothers and sisters is on the rise and stands at 77,445 at the end of 2021, of which 61,310 are up to the age of 67, 90% qualified.

The rate of brothers and sisters graduating from a basic course up to the age of 67 rose to 2.7 per 1,000 people from 2.0 in 2010.

The rate of employed dentists was 0.87 per 1,000 people in 2020, higher than the OECD average of 0.69.

In 2021, 408 new licenses in dentistry were issued, an increase from 267 in 2010.

At the end of 2021, there were 12,690 holders of permission to practice dentistry, of which 10,339 were under the age of 67.

pharmacy

The rate of employed pharmacists was 0.90 per 1,000 people in 2020, similar to the average of the OECD countries with a figure of 0.87.

In 2021, 305 new pharmacy licenses were issued, compared to 537 in 2010.

At the end of 2021, there were 10,052 holders of permission to practice pharmacy, of which 8,767 were under the age of 67.

psychology

In 2021, 590 new licenses in psychology were issued compared to about 300 in the previous decade.

At the end of 2021, there were 15,807 male and female psychologists, of which 13,266 were under the age of 67.

On average in 2021-2019, there were 12.6 thousand psychologists employed per year in the health services.

At the end of 2021, there were 8,864 expert psychologists, of whom 6,951 were under the age of 67, of whom 55% were experts in clinical psychology and 27% were experts in educational psychology.
