As the Korean Wave expands from music to movies, food, and beauty, an event to discuss ways for Oriental medicine to join the Korean Wave is attracting attention.

This is a discussion held on the 29th of last month in the small conference room of the National Assembly Library with the theme of ‘Strengthening Competitiveness for the Globalization of K-medi’. It was co-hosted by Rep. Seo Myung-ok (People Power Party), Rep. Lee In-young (Democratic Party of Korea), and Rep. Hwang Un-ha (Fatherland Innovation Party), and sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Inha University Social Science Research Institute, Korean Oriental Hospital Association, and Korean Academy of Sciences.

At the symposium that day, various strategies for oriental medicine to become globally competitive were discussed in two sessions. In session 1, the case of Taiwan, which has a similar medical environment, and the reality of Korea were compared and analyzed, and the views of oriental medical doctors on strengthening the competitiveness of oriental medicine medical services were introduced.

In the second session, the results of a public survey on the expansion of insurance coverage for oriental medicine treatment were disclosed, and a presentation was given on topics such as ways to revitalize medical tourism through collaboration between oriental and western medicine.

Nam Chang-hee, director of Inha University’s Social Science Research Institute and the person in charge of running the discussion, said, “We cannot tie the hands of Korean athletes and let them compete on the world stage,” and added, “If institutional support is provided for Korean medicine, K-medi can become a new driving force for the Korean Wave and contribute to the health of people around the world and to enhancing the brand image of Korea.”
