Long-Awaited Katarina Lift Reopens, Only to Be Shut Down Again

After 13 years of anticipation, the Katarina lift finally reopened last week on October 19. However, the joy was short-lived as the lift had to be shut down again due to technical issues caused by strong winds.

The Katarina lift, which had been closed since 2010, was expected to provide a much-needed transportation option for locals and tourists alike. However, just a few days after its reopening, it was forced to close its doors once again.

The strong winds proved to be the main culprit behind the lift’s shutdown. The elevator is equipped with functions designed to handle such conditions, including reducing speed or stopping the elevator altogether. Unfortunately, last Saturday’s winds were too powerful.

Eva Rosman, communications manager at Projekt Slussen, explained, “There is a cable under the lift car that swayed so much in the wind that it broke an important sensor for the lift’s operation.” The sensor acts as a crucial component in the elevator’s automatic system, preventing it from running when it is broken.

Despite the setback, Rosman acknowledged that these situations can sometimes be unavoidable. “It is a shame that it was only running for a few days. But that can be the case sometimes,” she said.

The maintenance and care of the Katarina lift are managed by Atrium Ljungberg, who are now working with their supplier to address the technical issues. Marianne Perslow, communications manager at Atrium Ljungberg, expressed hope that the elevator will be fully operational again before the end of the week.

Locals and visitors eager to experience the Katarina lift will have to wait a little longer, but they can rest assured that the necessary efforts are being made to ensure its smooth operation.
