Candidate for one of the 20 seats in Category C of the IMO Council, Morocco was able to garner the support of the majority of the Organization’s member states to access its 16th term within the Council, thanks to the mobilization of the entire diplomatic apparatus of the Kingdom, in close coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, indicates, Friday, a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad.

According to the same source, this re-election reflects the credibility enjoyed by the maritime strategy implemented by Morocco, in accordance with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, contained in his speech on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Green March, announcing a national upgrade of the Atlantic coast of the Kingdom, to make it a high place of human communion, a pole of economic integration and a center of continental and international influence.

A maritime nation par excellence due to its geostrategic position, its long naval tradition and the maritime potential offered by its 3,500 kilometers of coastline extending over its Mediterranean and Atlantic maritime facades, the Kingdom makes a substantial contribution to the achievement of the mandate of the IMO, of which it has been a member since 1962, the press release underlines.

As a member of the Council, Morocco will continue its action for the implementation of the objectives defined in the strategy of the Organization in the areas of environmental protection, climate change, safety and security of ships, technical development and training of seafarers, the ministry said.

The International Maritime Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations, responsible for ensuring the safety and security of maritime transport and preventing pollution of the seas by ships. The IMO Council, composed of 40 members, is the body responsible for supervising its work and coordinating the activities of the Organization’s bodies.
