Yesterday the kings recreated a historic moment. At the end of the Princess of Asturias Awards celebration, Felipe VI shook hands with Queen Letizia at the Reconquista hotel in Oviedo. The cameras captured an image reminiscent of another from exactly 20 years ago.
On October 24, 2003, it was still not known that the then prince was engaged to Letizia Ortiz. The person who was at that time a Spanish Television journalist covered the awards ceremony and Felipe was in charge of awarding them. A year later everything had changed and she returned to the hotel in the Asturian capital as Princess of Asturias. Nor were they aware that in the distant future it was going to be her daughter Leonor who would preside over the same awards.
Now, all eyes are on the heir to the throne. On October 31 she will reach the age of majority and she will swear in the Constitution in the Congress of Deputies.
Felipe approached the RTVE set to greet his future partner. A week later -on November 1, 2003-, the Royal Family announced the marriage engagement between Felipe and Letizia. The images that were taken that day have been repeated this October 20.

43rd Princess of Asturias Awards
This Friday the 43rd edition of the Princess of Asturias Awards was held at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo. King Felipe VI’s speech was marked by the escalation of violence in the Middle East between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). The monarch launched a message of unity in defense of peace.
“We all had hope, at the beginning of the 21st century, of living in a more peaceful, more stable, more orderly world. However, and we all regret it, this is not the case,” he lamented. The 21st century has brought “the terrible return of war, of war conflicts in their most stark and brutal version.” Later, his intervention included the recognition of the winners in this edition, not only for their contributions and merits in their fields but also for the ‘human union’ that characterizes them in his work.
“By praising the work of all of them (referring to the winners), we get a little closer to that world that we so need and long for, made of the will to do good, of people who are a bastion of civic and moral values, and who work every day to help solve some of the most serious problems of humanity,” proclaimed Felipe VI.
